Lidia Amjadeen “Inequality in the standards of living of women and men in Ukraine: how does it change under the impact of economic transformations?”

Aims: to investigate the standards of living of men and women in Ukraine and how they have changed during the years of independence.

Data: we used macro-level data as well as individual-level data from the EUREQUAL survey and data from social monitoring surveys conducted by the Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine between 1998 and 2008.

Results: women of higher education and a higher professional level occupy lower positions and receive lower wages than men. At the same time, much fewer women who receive the same level wages as men apply for social benefits. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of single-mother households, especially in rural areas.

Conclusion: the social monitoring data allowed us to establish the dynamics of change in the standards of living between women and men in Ukraine in the last decade.
